Platinum Market Size in Western Africa

In 2021, Nigeria (X kg) represented the major exporter of platinum in Western Africa, constituting 100% of total export.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the platinum exports, with a CAGR of +16.3% from 2012 to 2021. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) also remains the largest platinum supplier in Western Africa.

Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, platinum imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X kg) was the key importer of platinum, making up 67% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X kg) and Senegal (X kg), together creating a 27% share of total imports. Benin (X kg) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+39.5%) and Benin (+33.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +39.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, Senegal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported platinum in Western Africa, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Benin ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Senegal totaled +45.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Benin (+17.9% per year) and Ghana (-8.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 94% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 997%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
