Exports in Western Africa

Pliers and pincers exports soared to X tons in 2021, rising by 60% against 2020 figures. In general, exports saw a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 62%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pliers and pincers exports contracted to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +52.0% against 2015 indices. In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) represented the major exporter of pliers, pincers and tweezers for nonmedical use, mixing up 37% of total exports. Senegal (X kg) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Sierra Leone (11%), Ghana (10%), Mali (9.6%) and Guinea (8.6%). Burkina Faso (X kg) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +8.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Guinea (+67.3%), Burkina Faso (+63.5%), Senegal (+54.6%), Mali (+51.6%), Sierra Leone (+20.1%) and Ghana (+12.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +67.3% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso and Ghana increased by +14, +9.1, +8.4, +6.3, +3.9 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X), Senegal ($X) and Nigeria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 57% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Ghana, Guinea, Mali and Burkina Faso, which together accounted for a further 35%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +61.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -43.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 41% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of pliers, pincers and tweezers for nonmedical use, when their volume decreased by -20.5% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 185%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pliers and pincers imports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 190%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest levels of pliers and pincers imports in 2021 were Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together finishing at 69% of total import. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Guinea (X tons). All these countries together held near 19% share of total imports. Mauritania (X tons) and Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +33.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pliers and pincers importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Senegal ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 58% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Guinea, Nigeria, Mauritania and Togo, which together accounted for a further 28%.

Togo, with a CAGR of +43.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 85%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
