Plum And Sloe Market Size in Western Africa

The West African plum and sloe market reduced to $X in 2022, which is down by -6.4% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of plums and sloes increased by 9.5% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 218% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plum and sloe exports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a dramatic slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 222% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Togo (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) represented the main exporters of plums and sloes in Western Africa, together amounting to approx. 79% of total exports. Mali (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Nigeria (6.8%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +45.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest plum and sloe supplying countries in Western Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Togo ($X), with a combined 91% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +39.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of plums and sloes were imported in Western Africa; waning by -9% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 256%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plum and sloe imports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 81%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of plums and sloes, namely Cabo Verde, Mauritania and Nigeria, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Senegal (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mali (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 17% share of total imports. Ghana (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +52.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plum and sloe importing markets in Western Africa were Cabo Verde ($X), Mauritania ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 65% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Ghana and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

Mali, with a CAGR of +41.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 80%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
