In general, exports showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 180%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, polyethylene glycol and polyether exports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 144%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Niger represented the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 40% of total exports. Ghana (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 57% share of total exports. Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +7.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Senegal ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 69% of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +8.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 6.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 93%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of polyethylene glycols and polyethers in primary forms, when their volume decreased by -9.3% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate notable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 46%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, polyethylene glycol and polyether imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 55% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together creating a 30% share of total imports. The following importers - Mali (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) - together made up 8.2% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to polyethylene glycol and polyether imports into Nigeria stood at +1.6%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+18.5%), Mali (+12.1%), Guinea (+11.1%), Senegal (+8.9%), Ghana (+7.6%) and Burkina Faso (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +18.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Senegal and Mali increased by +7.5, +3, +2 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported polyethylene glycols and polyethers in primary forms in Western Africa, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 9.5% share.

In Nigeria, polyethylene glycol and polyether imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+8.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+16.7% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Guinea ($X per ton) and Mali ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) and Nigeria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guinea (+2.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
