Exports by Country
In 2021, Mauritania (X units) represented the main exporter of porous-tipped pens and markers, creating 36% of total exports. Mali (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 21% share, followed by Senegal (18%) and Ghana (15%). Sierra Leone (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Togo (X units) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Sierra Leone (with a CAGR of +58.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mali ($X) remains the largest porous-tipped pen supplier in Western Africa, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritania, with a 9.1% share.
In Mali, porous-tipped pen exports shrank by an average annual rate of -2.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (-4.1% per year) and Mauritania (+33.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -52.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 34%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per unit), while Ghana (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, overseas purchases of porous-tipped pens and markers increased by 95% to X units, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed a resilient expansion. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, porous-tipped pen imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 87% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Nigeria represented the main importing country with an import of around X units, which recorded 48% of total imports. Ghana (X units) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (8.6%) and Guinea (7.7%). Senegal (X units), Benin (X units) and Mauritania (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritania (+48.1%), Ghana (+29.2%), Guinea (+24.3%), Benin (+15.8%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+9.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +48.1% from 2012-2021. Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Ghana (+17 p.p.), Guinea (+5.8 p.p.), Mauritania (+2.3 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Senegal and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -2.1% and -24.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest porous-tipped pen importing markets in Western Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Nigeria ($X), together comprising 64% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +17.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, waning by -23.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 91% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
