Potato Chips Market Size in Western Africa

The West African potato chips market expanded to $X in 2022, growing by 4.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -4.0% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato chips production expanded to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -4.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, the amount of potato chips exported in Western Africa declined to X tons, dropping by -11.2% on 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 128% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, potato chips exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a mild expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 108%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Senegal was the major exporter of potato chips in Western Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 52% of total exports in 2022. Togo (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 19% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (12%), Nigeria (11%) and Ghana (6.3%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to potato chips exports from Senegal stood at +3.9%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+70.9%), Togo (+17.1%), Nigeria (+10.1%) and Ghana (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +70.9% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Togo, Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria and Senegal increased by +13, +12, +4.9 and +2.2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest potato chips supplier in Western Africa, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Senegal stood at -2.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+82.2% per year) and Togo (+21.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of potato chips, when their volume decreased by -15.7% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, potato chips imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of potato chips imports in 2022 were Senegal (X tons), Gambia (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together amounting to 82% of total import. It was distantly followed by Guinea (X tons), comprising a 5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Mauritania (with a CAGR of +34.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Cabo Verde ($X) and Mauritania ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 41% share of total imports.

Mauritania, with a CAGR of +35.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -2.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 15%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
