Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 118% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved cows meat exports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports faced a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 71% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Togo was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 50% of total exports. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Senegal (11%), Gambia (8.1%), Mali (7%) and Cote d'Ivoire (6%). Nigeria (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Togo decreased at an average annual rate of -17.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+40.4%) and Nigeria (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +40.4% from 2012-2021. Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mali (-14.4%), Ghana (-21.0%) and Gambia (-28.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+8.9 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+6 p.p.), Togo (+5.8 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.5 p.p.) and Mali (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana and Gambia saw its share reduced by -5.1% and -17.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Ghana ($X) and Togo ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 80% share of total exports. Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Mali and Gambia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Among the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +29.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 187% against the previous year. Export price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+25.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, imports of prepared or preserved meat or offal of bovine animals in Western Africa expanded markedly to X tons, growing by 9.9% compared with 2020. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, preserved cows meat imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons) represented the major importer of prepared or preserved meat or offal of bovine animals, comprising 36% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Guinea (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Gambia (X tons) and Togo (X tons). All these countries together took near 49% share of total imports. Sierra Leone (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of prepared or preserved meat or offal of bovine animals. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+11.8%), Cote d'Ivoire (+5.4%), Guinea (+1.8%) and Gambia (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sierra Leone emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +11.8% from 2012-2021. Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Togo (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+5.9 p.p.), Ghana (+4.4 p.p.), Sierra Leone (+2.3 p.p.), Guinea (+2.1 p.p.) and Gambia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Togo (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported prepared or preserved meat or offal of bovine animals in Western Africa, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an 11% share.

In Ghana, preserved cows meat imports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nigeria (+1.1% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.7% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 12% against the previous year.
