In value terms, preservative-treated rough wood exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Cote d'Ivoire was the main exporter of preservative-treated rough wood in Western Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X cubic meters, which was near 70% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X cubic meters), creating a 27% share of total exports. Ghana (X cubic meters) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Cote d'Ivoire decreased at an average annual rate of -20.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+49.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +49.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-29.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+27 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -7.1% and -20.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +31.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per cubic meter, approximately equating the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per cubic meter), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of preservative-treated rough wood decreased by -35.3% to X cubic meters in 2021. In general, imports recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 94% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X cubic meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preservative-treated rough wood imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 111% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Ghana (X cubic meters) represented the largest importer of preservative-treated rough wood, generating 50% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Liberia (X cubic meters), Senegal (X cubic meters) and Mauritania (X cubic meters), together committing a 32% share of total imports. Guinea (X cubic meters), Sierra Leone (X cubic meters) and Cabo Verde (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preservative-treated rough wood imports into Ghana stood at -3.1%. Liberia (+14 p.p.), Senegal (+3.9 p.p.), Guinea (+3.5 p.p.), Cabo Verde (+2.5 p.p.) and Sierra Leone (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ghana saw its share reduced by -2.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported preservative-treated rough wood in Western Africa, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Liberia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 14% share.

In Ghana, preservative-treated rough wood imports contracted by an average annual rate of -7.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Liberia (+51.2% per year) and Senegal (-1.6% per year).
