In 2021, the West African preserved tomato market decreased by -2.7% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
Preserved Tomato Production in Western Africa
In value terms, preserved tomato production dropped modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, shipments abroad of preserved tomatoes was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 136%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, preserved tomato exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 147%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Nigeria was the largest exporter of preserved tomatoes in Western Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 50% of total exports in 2021. Togo (X tons) held a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (16%) and Senegal (6.8%). The following exporters - Niger (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) - each recorded a 7.4% share of total exports.
Exports from Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Togo (+14.5%) and Senegal (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Niger (-4.7%), Burkina Faso (-9.2%) and Ghana (-20.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+35 p.p.), Togo (+16 p.p.) and Senegal (+3.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana saw its share reduced by -49.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Senegal ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 78% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +17.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 1.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price enjoyed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 64%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+17.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of preserved tomatoes increased by 72% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, preserved tomato imports surged to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire represented the major importer of preserved tomatoes in Western Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 33% of total imports in 2021. Cabo Verde (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Mali (9.2%), Ghana (7.8%), Senegal (7%), Guinea (4.7%) and Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (4.7%). Mauritania (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Liberia (X tons), Guinea-Bissau (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to preserved tomato imports into Cote d'Ivoire stood at +1.5%. At the same time, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (+43.5%), Mauritania (+16.6%), Guinea-Bissau (+12.1%), Guinea (+11.9%), Mali (+11.0%), Gambia (+10.6%), Burkina Faso (+6.8%), Liberia (+4.1%), Ghana (+3.6%) and Senegal (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +43.5% from 2012-2021. Cabo Verde experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Nigeria (-10.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mali (+4.7 p.p.), Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (+4.4 p.p.), Mauritania (+3 p.p.) and Guinea (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Cabo Verde (-1.8 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (-2.6 p.p.) and Nigeria (-9.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported preserved tomatoes in Western Africa, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Cabo Verde, with a 10% share.
In Cote d'Ivoire, preserved tomato imports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (+55.3% per year) and Cabo Verde (+3.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -4.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+9.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
