Mali was the main exporting country with an export of about X units, which amounted to 72% of total exports. Togo (X units) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (4.9%). The following exporters - Niger (X units), Senegal (X units) and Gambia (X units) - together made up 6% of total exports.

Exports from Mali increased at an average annual rate of +13.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+40.1%), Togo (+21.2%) and Senegal (+6.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +40.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Gambia (-2.4%) and Niger (-19.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mali (+42 p.p.), Togo (+12 p.p.) and Ghana (+4.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Niger saw its share reduced by -30.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mali ($X) remains the largest primary cells and primary batteries supplier in Western Africa, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Gambia, with a 9% share.

In Mali, primary cells and primary batteries exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (+19.4% per year) and Gambia (-12.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, waning by -4.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 67%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Gambia ($X per unit), while Mali ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (-1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

Primary cells and primary batteries imports soared to X units in 2022, increasing by 18% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, showed a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 87%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, primary cells and primary batteries imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 40%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Ghana was the largest importer of primary cells and primary batteries in Western Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was approx. 47% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Guinea (X units), Sierra Leone (X units) and Liberia (X units), together making up a 46% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Moreover, Sierra Leone emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +6.6% from 2012-2022. Liberia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Guinea (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Sierra Leone (+6.8 p.p.) and Liberia (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Guinea saw its share reduced by -8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest primary cells and primary batteries importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Guinea ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 57% share of total imports. Sierra Leone and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

Sierra Leone, with a CAGR of +0.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -11.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the import price increased by 67% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Sierra Leone ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
