Pumpkin Market Size in Western Africa

The West African pumpkin market surged to $X in 2022, with an increase of 17% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a resilient increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Pumpkin Production in Western Africa

In value terms, pumpkin production rose notably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 65%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Niger (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of pumpkin production, accounting for 71% of total volume. Moreover, pumpkin production in Niger exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Mali (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), with a 5.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Niger amounted to +23.8%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Mali (+2.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+0.1% per year).

The average pumpkin yield shrank to X tons per ha in 2022, reducing by -9.4% against 2021 figures. The yield indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pumpkin yield increased by +18.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by 37% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then dropped in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of pumpkin (squash and gourds) in Western Africa surged to X ha, picking up by 20% against the year before. The total harvested area indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pumpkin harvested area decreased by -14.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to pumpkin production attained the maximum at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of pumpkin (squash and gourds) were exported in Western Africa; picking up by 9.9% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, showed a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 240%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pumpkin exports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 174%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Ghana was the major exporter of pumpkin (squash and gourds) in Western Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 63% of total exports in 2022. Senegal (X tons) took a 30% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Gambia (5%).

Exports from Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +17.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Gambia (+62.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Gambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +62.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Senegal (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+53 p.p.) and Gambia (+4.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Senegal saw its share reduced by -35.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Senegal ($X) and Gambia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 98% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Gambia, with a CAGR of +68.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 28%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Gambia ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Pumpkin Imports

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of pumpkin (squash and gourds), when their volume decreased by -15.1% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 61%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pumpkin imports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Mauritania represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 75% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Cabo Verde (X tons), committing a 16% share of total imports. Liberia (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pumpkin imports into Mauritania stood at +11.5%. At the same time, Liberia (+56.8%) and Cabo Verde (+9.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Liberia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +56.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-5.5%) and Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (-7.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritania (+14 p.p.) and Liberia (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-6.4 p.p.) and Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (-7.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mauritania ($X), Cabo Verde ($X) and Liberia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 90% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Liberia, with a CAGR of +46.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 41%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
