Quince Market Size in Western Africa

The West African quince market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, increasing by 27% against the previous year. In general, consumption posted buoyant growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Quince Production in Western Africa

In value terms, quince production rose remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Mali (X tons), Benin (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X kg), together comprising 95% of total production.

Exports in Western Africa

After four years of decline, overseas shipments of quinces decreased by -2.2% to X kg in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a tangible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 2,913% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, quince exports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed noticeable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 2,749% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Ghana (X kg), followed by Senegal (X kg) were the largest exporters of quinces, together creating 100% of total exports.

From 2015 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of +1,270.0%).

In value terms, Ghana ($X) and Senegal ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021.

Ghana, with a CAGR of +718.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -10.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Senegal stood at $X per ton.

From 2015 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (-40.3%).

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, the amount of quinces imported in Western Africa skyrocketed to X tons, growing by 225% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, quince imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a significant increase. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (X tons) was the largest importer of quinces, mixing up 57% of total imports. Senegal (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons). All these countries together held near 42% share of total imports.

Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of quinces. At the same time, Senegal (+32.2%), Mauritania (+28.9%), Cote d'Ivoire (+17.7%) and Cabo Verde (+11.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +32.2% from 2012-2021. Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (+57 p.p.) and Senegal (+17 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mauritania, Cabo Verde and Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -2.9%, -20.7% and -28.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported quinces in Western Africa, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Senegal (+18.8% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+7.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a deep downturn. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (-2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
