Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, the amount of raw hides and skins of bovine animals exported in Western Africa contracted remarkably to X tons, which is down by -77.3% on 2020 figures. In general, exports faced a sharp curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 120% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cows skin exports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a dramatic setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 134%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Togo (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) dominates exports structure, together achieving 82% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together generating an 11% share of total exports. Nigeria (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Mauritania (with a CAGR of -10.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, Mauritania ($X), Togo ($X) and Senegal ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 82% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Mauritania, with a CAGR of +0.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 17% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 22%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, the amount of raw hides and skins of bovine animals imported in Western Africa soared to X tons, increasing by 30% on 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 113%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
In value terms, cows skin imports declined to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 133%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.
