Razor Market Size in Western Africa

After two years of growth, the West African razor market decreased by -15.5% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Razor Production in Western Africa

In value terms, razor production shrank remarkably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 74% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Razor Exports

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, the amount of razors exported in Western Africa fell sharply to X tons, reducing by -59% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 417%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, razor exports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a pronounced increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 367% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Senegal prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), mixing up a 9.4% share of total exports. Ghana (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the razors exports, with a CAGR of +49.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+16.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Ghana (-30.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Senegal and Cote d'Ivoire increased by +85 and +5.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest razor supplier in Western Africa, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 20% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Senegal stood at +37.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+19.2% per year) and Ghana (-33.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Razor Imports

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of razors decreased by -13.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 69% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, razor imports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 54% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Sierra Leone (X tons) were the key importers of razors, together generating 89% of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Sierra Leone (with a CAGR of +27.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported razors in Western Africa, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana totaled +5.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cote d'Ivoire (+7.1% per year) and Nigeria (-2.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 21% against the previous year. Import price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 33%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
