The West African register book market reduced to $X in 2022, waning by -8.2% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of registers, account books, order books and receipt books were exported in Western Africa; with a decrease of -31.9% against 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed perceptible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 102%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, register book exports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 87%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Togo dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2022. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Benin (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 14% share of total exports. The following exporters - Nigeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - together made up 7.7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to register book exports from Togo stood at +7.0%. At the same time, Benin (+26.0%), Cote d'Ivoire (+13.0%), Ghana (+7.0%) and Nigeria (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +26.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Senegal (-20.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Togo, Cote d'Ivoire and Benin increased by +23, +5.4 and +4.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Togo ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Senegal ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 72% share of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +18.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 70%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+4.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, imports of registers, account books, order books and receipt books in Western Africa shrank to X tons, which is down by -9.8% on 2021 figures. Total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +99.3% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, register book imports declined to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +111.3% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 39%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Senegal (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) represented roughly 43% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Liberia (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons), together constituting a 39% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +8.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 62% of total imports. Guinea, Mauritania, Liberia and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mauritania, with a CAGR of +10.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
