Relay Market Size in Western Africa
The West African relay market declined slightly to $X in 2022, which is down by -3.9% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Relay Production in Western Africa
In value terms, relay production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa
In 2022, overseas shipments of relays were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, faced a deep setback. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, relay exports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 7.7% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Niger (X units) and Nigeria (X units) represented roughly 76% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Benin (X units), comprising a 16% share of total exports. Sierra Leone (X units) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Benin (with a CAGR of +81.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest relay supplying countries in Western Africa were Niger ($X), Benin ($X) and Nigeria ($X), together comprising 76% of total exports.
Benin, with a CAGR of +47.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, dropping by -21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 59%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Relay Imports
Imports in Western Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of relays decreased by -18.6% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 116%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.
In value terms, relay imports reduced to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -23.7% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X units), Ghana (X units), Togo (X units), Burkina Faso (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Benin (X units) represented the key importer of relays in Western Africa, generating 81% of total import. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X units), generating a 4.7% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +23.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest relay importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Ghana ($X), with a combined 45% share of total imports. Senegal, Burkina Faso, Togo and Benin lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
Togo, with a CAGR of +21.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 36%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Togo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
