In value terms, safety headgear production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. Exports in Western Africa
Safety headgear exports declined rapidly to X units in 2021, which is down by -23.8% against the previous year. In general, exports, however, showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 176% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, safety headgear exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 252% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Senegal (X units) was the largest exporter of safety headgear, mixing up 42% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Nigeria (X units), Togo (X units) and Mali (X units). All these countries together took approx. 47% share of total exports. The following exporters - Sierra Leone (X units) and Liberia (X units) - each reached an 8% share of total exports.
Exports from Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +25.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+31.7%), Sierra Leone (+31.2%) and Mali (+30.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +31.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-1.4%), Togo (-1.7%) and Liberia (-8.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+32 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+15 p.p.), Mali (+4 p.p.) and Sierra Leone (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Liberia, Togo and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -12.9%, -13.1% and -15.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) emerged as the largest safety headgear supplier in Western Africa, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 25% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 8.5% share.
In Senegal, safety headgear exports increased at an average annual rate of +32.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+44.8% per year) and Nigeria (+4.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Sierra Leone ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+9.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, purchases abroad of safety headgear increased by 14% to X units, rising for the fourth consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, safety headgear imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Guinea (X units) represented roughly 55% of total imports in 2021. Ghana (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Nigeria (6.8%), Senegal (5.1%) and Sierra Leone (4.5%). The following importers - Mali (X units) and Liberia (X units) - each reached a 6% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Liberia (with a CAGR of +25.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest safety headgear importing markets in Western Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Guinea ($X), together accounting for 53% of total imports.
Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +23.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, growing by 5.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per unit), while Sierra Leone ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
