Self-Adhesive Paper Market Size in Western Africa
In 2021, the West African self-adhesive paper market decreased by -5% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, consumption showed a resilient increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of self-adhesive paper and paperboard decreased by -32.9% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 87%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, self-adhesive paper exports dropped markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 129%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) was the key exporter of self-adhesive paper and paperboard, mixing up 54% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), together comprising a 40% share of total exports. Togo (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -13.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Togo (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +4.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-9.5%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-13.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana and Togo increased by +6.3 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the largest self-adhesive paper supplying countries in Western Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X), with a combined 85% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Togo, which accounted for a further 5.7%.
Togo, with a CAGR of +12.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 182% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of self-adhesive paper and paperboard were imported in Western Africa; surging by 5.2% on the previous year. In general, imports posted strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 39%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, self-adhesive paper imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Nigeria was the main importer of self-adhesive paper and paperboard in Western Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 55% of total imports in 2021. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 23% share, followed by Ghana (13%) and Senegal (5.1%).
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the self-adhesive paper and paperboard imports, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+13.8%), Cote d'Ivoire (+9.7%) and Senegal (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria (+13 p.p.) and Ghana (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal saw its share reduced by -2.9% and -6.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Ghana ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 87% of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +16.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 6.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
