In 2021, the West African full-rotation excavator market decreased by -13.8% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a strong increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, full-rotation excavator production surged to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a significant decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 293%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of self-propelled full-rotation excavators and bulldozers decreased by -44.6% to X units, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, exports showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 96%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, full-rotation excavator exports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 130%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Burkina Faso dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 55% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Senegal (X units), Niger (X units) and Nigeria (X units), together making up a 34% share of total exports. Cabo Verde (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to full-rotation excavator exports from Burkina Faso stood at +3.9%. At the same time, Niger (+13.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +13.0% from 2012-2021. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-2.4%), Senegal (-2.4%), Cabo Verde (-9.7%) and Nigeria (-10.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Burkina Faso (+32 p.p.), Niger (+4.3 p.p.), Ghana (+3.7 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+1.9 p.p.) and Senegal (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cabo Verde and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -1.7% and -3.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) emerged as the largest full-rotation excavator supplier in Western Africa, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Burkina Faso totaled +2.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+5.6% per year) and Nigeria (-1.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a mild setback. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Cabo Verde ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of self-propelled full-rotation excavators and bulldozers, when their volume decreased by -15.9% to X units. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, full-rotation excavator imports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of self-propelled full-rotation excavators and bulldozers, namely Nigeria, Ghana and Guinea, represented more than half of total import. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by Mali (7%) and Senegal (6.4%). Mauritania (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +64.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest full-rotation excavator importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Guinea ($X), together comprising 68% of total imports. These countries were followed by Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal and Mauritania, which together accounted for a further 22%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +50.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 1.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 7.4%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per unit), while Mauritania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
