Semiconductor Device Market Size in Western Africa
The West African semiconductor device market shrank slightly to $X in 2021, dropping by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a slight downturn. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, semiconductor device production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 23%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, overseas shipments of semiconductor devices decreased by -7.2% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 1,917%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2020, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, semiconductor device exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 460% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Burkina Faso (X units) and Benin (X units) dominates exports structure, together comprising 97% of total exports. Niger (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +157.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Burkina Faso ($X) remains the largest semiconductor device supplier in Western Africa, comprising 56% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Niger ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.
In Burkina Faso, semiconductor device exports increased at an average annual rate of +118.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Niger (+64.5% per year) and Benin (0.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, growing by 53% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a sharp decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 307% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per unit), while Benin (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, purchases abroad of semiconductor devices increased by 177% to X units, rising for the third year in a row after four years of decline. In general, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 990%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, semiconductor device imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 698%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria dominates imports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 96% of total imports in 2021. Burkina Faso (X units) held a minor share of total imports.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the semiconductor devices imports, with a CAGR of +32.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+14.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria (+15 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Burkina Faso saw its share reduced by -5.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported semiconductor devices in Western Africa, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Burkina Faso ($X), with a 14% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria totaled +22.0%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to less than $X per unit, waning by -10.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 237% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
