Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 587% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, knitted shawl and scarf exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 1,729%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Senegal (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units) were the key exporters of shawls, scarves and the like of knitted or crocheted textiles in 2022, recording approx. 29% and 25% of total exports, respectively. Mali (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Niger (X units), Nigeria (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units). All these countries together took approx. 38% share of total exports. Ghana (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +10.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) emerged as the largest knitted shawl and scarf supplier in Western Africa, comprising 37% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Niger ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal totaled -8.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Niger (+1.4% per year) and Burkina Faso (-1.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, surging by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 166% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per unit), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+16.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa
After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of shawls, scarves and the like of knitted or crocheted textiles decreased by -17.3% to X units in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 106%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, knitted shawl and scarf imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 183% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Imports by Country
Guinea was the largest importer of shawls, scarves and the like of knitted or crocheted textiles in Western Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was near 55% of total imports in 2022. Gambia (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Ghana (X units) and Sierra Leone (X units). All these countries together held near 36% share of total imports. The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Mali (X units) - together made up 6% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to knitted shawl and scarf imports into Guinea stood at +47.2%. At the same time, Ghana (+64.7%), Gambia (+51.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (+15.5%) and Sierra Leone (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +64.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mali (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Guinea (+46 p.p.), Gambia (+14 p.p.) and Ghana (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Cote d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone and Mali saw its share reduced by -3.3%, -15.6% and -44.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, the largest knitted shawl and scarf importing markets in Western Africa were Guinea ($X), Gambia ($X) and Ghana ($X), together accounting for 86% of total imports.
In terms of the main importing countries, Gambia, with a CAGR of +67.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 3.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Gambia ($X per unit), while Sierra Leone ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
