Sheet Piling Market Size in Western Africa
The West African sheet piling market shrank significantly to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -17.4% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine years. The total production indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +34.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 69% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, the amount of sheet piling, shapes and sections (of iron or steel) exported in Western Africa reduced remarkably to X tons, which is down by -24.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 137% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sheet piling exports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 148% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented the main exporters of sheet piling, shapes and sections (of iron or steel) in Western Africa, together resulting at near 78% of total exports. Togo (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (9%).
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +44.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest sheet piling supplier in Western Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 7.6% share.
In Nigeria, sheet piling exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+60.0% per year) and Senegal (+0.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 69%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa
Sheet piling imports dropped rapidly to X tons in 2021, reducing by -27.5% on the previous year. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sheet piling imports dropped sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 70%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 62% of total imports in 2021. Sierra Leone (X tons) took a 9.5% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (8%) and Ghana (6.5%). The following importers - Guinea (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - each accounted for an 8.8% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sheet piling imports into Nigeria stood at +2.1%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+13.0%) and Guinea (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +13.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-2.1%), Sierra Leone (-5.0%) and Senegal (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+9.2 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+5.3 p.p.) and Guinea (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-1.6 p.p.), Sierra Leone (-6 p.p.) and Senegal (-6.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest sheet piling importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Sierra Leone ($X), together accounting for 66% of total imports.
Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +25.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
