Knitted Ski-Suit Market Size in Western Africa

After two years of growth, the West African knitted ski-suit market decreased by -33% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The total production indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 20%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa

Knitted ski-suit exports contracted to X units in 2022, shrinking by -4.8% compared with the year before. In general, exports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 356% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, knitted ski-suit exports shrank to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 275% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Senegal dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 80% of total exports in 2022. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 7.8% share, followed by Niger (7.8%). The following exporters - Nigeria (X units) and Mali (X units) - each recorded a 3.9% share of total exports.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ski-suits of knitted or crocheted textiles exports, with a CAGR of +40.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Nigeria (-6.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (-8.8%) and Niger (-50.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+71 p.p.) and Niger (+7.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-14.6 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-62.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest knitted ski-suit supplier in Western Africa, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Niger, with a 6.8% share.

In Senegal, knitted ski-suit exports expanded at an average annual rate of +44.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (-7.6% per year) and Niger (-50.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -4.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 106%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of ski-suits of knitted or crocheted textiles, when their volume decreased by -36.3% to X units. In general, imports saw a pronounced decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 368%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, knitted ski-suit imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 239%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire prevails in imports structure, resulting at X units, which was approx. 94% of total imports in 2022. Liberia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ski-suits of knitted or crocheted textiles imports, with a CAGR of +16.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Liberia (+8.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Cote d'Ivoire (+79 p.p.) and Liberia (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported ski-suits of knitted or crocheted textiles in Western Africa, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Liberia ($X), with a 6.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Cote d'Ivoire stood at +4.8%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, surging by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 176%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Liberia ($X per unit), while Cote d'Ivoire stood at $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Liberia (-0.9%).
