Skim Milk Market Size in Western Africa
After seven years of growth, the West African skim milk market decreased by -0.3% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +66.7% against 2013 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.
Skim Milk Production in Western Africa
In value terms, skim milk production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then declined modestly in the following year.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were Niger (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons), with a combined 92% share of total production.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +5.4%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Skim Milk Exports
Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, the amount of skim milk exported in Western Africa contracted remarkably to X tons, shrinking by -59.9% compared with 2020. In general, exports saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 103%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, skim milk exports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 257% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 42% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together committing a 43% share of total exports. Burkina Faso (X tons), Benin (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to skim milk exports from Cote d'Ivoire stood at -8.7%. At the same time, Benin (+25.0%), Ghana (+10.5%) and Nigeria (+9.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +25.0% from 2012-2021. Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-2.4%) and Gambia (-29.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+16 p.p.), Ghana (+12 p.p.), Senegal (+3.7 p.p.), Benin (+3.4 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cote d'Ivoire and Gambia saw its share reduced by -4.2% and -31.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest skim milk supplier in Western Africa, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Cote d'Ivoire totaled +15.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (+4.6% per year) and Nigeria (+8.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -2.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 76%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+26.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Skim Milk Imports
Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, the amount of skim milk imported in Western Africa soared to X tons, rising by 34% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +38.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, skim milk imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 43%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Mauritania dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 91% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Ghana (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) - each accounted for a 4% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to skim milk imports into Mauritania stood at +2.5%. At the same time, Ghana (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +3.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (-1.5 p.p.) significantly weakened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mauritania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported skim milk in Western Africa, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mauritania was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+8.4% per year) and Nigeria (-4.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -5.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 18%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+5.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
