The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 199% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Sierra Leone (X units) represented the key exporter of sparking plugs, generating 77% of total exports. Nigeria (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 14% share, followed by Mali (6%). Cote d'Ivoire (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Sierra Leone increased at an average annual rate of +10.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+32.9%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+12.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +32.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-7.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Sierra Leone and Mali increased by +33 and +5.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Mali ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 93% of total exports.

Mali, with a CAGR of +29.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 68% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Mali ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of sparking plugs decreased by -8.2% to X units in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 119% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, spark plug imports dropped to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -8.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ghana (X units) and Guinea (X units) represented the major importers of sparking plugs in Western Africa, together making up 65% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) held the next position in the ranking, distantly followed by Nigeria (X units). All these countries together took near 23% share of total imports. The following importers - Liberia (X units), Mauritania (X units) and Mali (X units) - together made up 7.5% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ghana (with a CAGR of +23.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest spark plug importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Guinea ($X), together comprising 74% of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, Mauritania, Liberia and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +13.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 6.4%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Guinea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
