In 2022, the amount of special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings exported in Western Africa skyrocketed to X units, growing by 21% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 55%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Ghana (X units), Senegal (X units), Togo (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units), together finishing at 72% of total export. Sierra Leone (X units) held a 5.7% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (5.2%), Guinea (4.9%) and Niger (4.7%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Sierra Leone (with a CAGR of +4.7%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest special-purpose electric lamp and lighting fitting supplier in Western Africa, comprising 32% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Niger ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Sierra Leone, with an 11% share.

In Senegal, exports of special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings expanded at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Niger (+12.7% per year) and Sierra Leone (-3.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -28.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 51% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per unit), while Togo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Niger (+21.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, overseas purchases of special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings decreased by -4.2% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, imports, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 107%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Ghana (X units) and Nigeria (X units) represented the main importers of special-purpose electric lamps and lighting fittings in 2022, finishing at approx. 34% and 24% of total imports, respectively. Senegal (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (7.8%) and Guinea (4.6%). The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 13% share.
