Plastic Support Market Size in Western Africa

The West African plastic support market expanded slightly to $X in 2022, increasing by 3.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Plastic Support Production in Western Africa

In value terms, plastic support production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of spools, cops and similar supports of plastics were exported in Western Africa; which is down by -8.8% on 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 86% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic support exports dropped modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 67% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire represented the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 39% of total exports. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Ghana (19%) and Mali (14%). Mauritania (X tons) and Togo (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +50.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest plastic support supplier in Western Africa, comprising 45% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 14% share.

In Cote d'Ivoire, plastic support exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (+10.6% per year) and Ghana (+17.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 8.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a perceptible downturn. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

After five years of growth, overseas purchases of spools, cops and similar supports of plastics decreased by -4.8% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, plastic support imports contracted to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented roughly 51% of total imports in 2022. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.8% share, followed by Mali (7.3%), Burkina Faso (7.3%), Guinea (6.4%) and Mauritania (5.3%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Guinea (with a CAGR of +15.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest plastic support importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 55% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Guinea, Mauritania and Burkina Faso lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

Among the main importing countries, Guinea, with a CAGR of +12.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -3.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
