Plastic Supports Market Size in Western Africa

The West African plastic supports market reduced slightly to $X in 2022, declining by -2% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +2.3% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Plastic Supports Production in Western Africa

In value terms, plastic supports production reduced slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +2.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 43% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of spools, cops, bobbins and similar supports of plastics was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 57% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic supports exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 52%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Togo represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 69% of total exports. Burkina Faso (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (10%). Cote d'Ivoire (X kg) took a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic supports exports from Togo stood at -8.1%. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+15.7%) and Senegal (+12.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +15.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cote d'Ivoire (-19.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Burkina Faso (+15 p.p.) and Senegal (+8.4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-7.8 p.p.) and Togo (-13.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Togo ($X), Burkina Faso ($X) and Senegal ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 94% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +21.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -20% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 121%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Plastic Supports Imports

Imports in Western Africa

Plastic supports imports shrank to X tons in 2022, falling by -6.2% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 140% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic supports imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a pronounced increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 184%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ghana (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) dominates imports structure, together committing 77% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), constituting a 9.4% share of total imports. The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) - each finished at a 9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Ghana (with a CAGR of +51.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 79% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +49.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -12.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 178% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
