While the share of Nigeria (+9.5 p.p.), Senegal (+7.4 p.p.), Togo (+3 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+2.8 p.p.), Mali (+2.2 p.p.) and Guinea (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Ghana (-20.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 58% share of total imports. Guinea, Mali, Senegal and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Togo, with a CAGR of +50.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, rising by 2.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per unit), while Senegal ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
