The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 160% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, starter motor exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 146%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Sierra Leone represented the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which finished at 40% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Togo (X units), Nigeria (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Mali (X units) and Ghana (X units), together constituting a 50% share of total exports. Senegal (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Sierra Leone increased at an average annual rate of +16.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Togo (+63.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+49.3%), Ghana (+21.0%), Nigeria (+16.9%), Senegal (+15.4%) and Mali (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +63.5% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Togo and Cote d'Ivoire increased by +17 and +7.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X) emerged as the largest starter motor supplier in Western Africa, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 7.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Sierra Leone stood at +18.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Nigeria (+15.7% per year) and Ghana (+27.3% per year).

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, rising by 15% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 49% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per unit), while Togo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+5.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of starter motors and dual purpose starter generators imported in Western Africa soared to X units, increasing by 21% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 39%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, starter motor imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Ghana represented the largest importer of starter motors and dual purpose starter generators in Western Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X units, which was approx. 45% of total imports in 2021. Nigeria (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (8.8%) and Guinea (6.8%). At the same time, Niger (+19.3%), Guinea (+16.6%), Mali (+11.4%), Mauritania (+7.0%), Senegal (+4.6%), Liberia (+2.5%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +19.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-7.0%) and Nigeria (-12.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, Niger, Mali and Senegal increased by +5.6, +3.5, +3.2, +3.2 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 60% of total imports. Guinea, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Liberia and Mauritania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Guinea, with a CAGR of +18.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 3.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
