Strawberry Market Size in Western Africa

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the West African strawberry market, when its value decreased by -3.6% to $X. In general, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Strawberry Production in Western Africa

In value terms, strawberry production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 258%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Sierra Leone (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Liberia (X tons), with a combined 94% share of total production. Guinea and Gambia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.1%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Gambia (with a CAGR of +3.1%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Strawberry Exports

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, the amount of strawberries exported in Western Africa fell slightly to X tons, stabilizing at 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 13,098%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, strawberry exports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 8,411%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Mauritania (X tons), together resulting at 100% of total export.

Mauritania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the strawberries exports, with a CAGR of +10.8% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mauritania increased by +3.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mauritania ($X) also remains the largest strawberry supplier in Western Africa.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mauritania amounted to +7.5%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 35%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Mauritania.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Mauritania amounted to -3.0% per year.

Strawberry Imports

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of strawberries were imported in Western Africa; dropping by -13.6% compared with 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, strawberry imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the main importer of strawberries in Western Africa, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 49% of total imports in 2022. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by Cabo Verde (10%) and Ghana (6.1%). The following importers - Guinea (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Mali (X tons) - each finished at a 6.6% share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +23.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+70.5%), Cabo Verde (+28.3%), Guinea (+26.5%), Senegal (+23.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+7.7%) and Ghana (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +70.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Nigeria (+24 p.p.), Cabo Verde (+6.6 p.p.) and Mali (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Ghana (-7.7 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (-25.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest strawberry importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Cabo Verde ($X), with a combined 88% share of total imports. Ghana, Senegal, Guinea and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.5%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +62.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the import price showed a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+14.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
