Sulphides, dithionites and sulphoxylates exports expanded significantly to X tons in 2022, growing by 8.1% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 116% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sulphides, dithionites and sulphoxylates exports rose notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 135% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mali (X tons) dominates exports structure, together mixing up 97% of total exports. Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +8.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, overseas purchases of sulphides, polysulphides, dithionites and sulphoxylates decreased by -22.3% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 68%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sulphides, dithionites and sulphoxylates imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Mali (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Togo (X tons) were the major importers of sulphides, polysulphides, dithionites and sulphoxylates, together mixing up 95% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +4.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Senegal ($X) and Mauritania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 48% share of total imports.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +5.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 40%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
