Sulphites Market Size in Western Africa

The West African sulphites market stood at $X in 2022, flattening at the previous year. The total consumption indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sulphites exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 3,161%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Senegal prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), generating an 8.2% share of total exports.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sulphites exports, with a CAGR of +25.4% from 2012 to 2022. Cote d'Ivoire (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+58 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Cote d'Ivoire saw its share reduced by -45.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest sulphites supplying countries in Western Africa were Senegal ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X).

Senegal, with a CAGR of +9.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 313% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Senegal amounted to $X per ton.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of sulphites decreased by -9.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 219%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sulphites imports rose modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 144% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest levels of sulphites imports in 2022 were Nigeria (X tons), Liberia (X tons) and Guinea (X tons), together reaching 70% of total import. Senegal (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Ghana (8.1%) and Cote d'Ivoire (5.7%). Togo (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Guinea (with a CAGR of +40.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Guinea ($X) and Liberia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 66% of total imports.

Guinea, with a CAGR of +50.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 34%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
