In 2022, the amount of surgical gloves exported in Western Africa contracted sharply to X tons, declining by -33.5% on the year before. In general, exports, however, saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 225%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted notably in the following year.
In value terms, surgical glove exports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 277%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Senegal represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 40% of total exports. Mali (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Sierra Leone (13%), Ghana (10%), Togo (9.9%), Benin (5.7%) and Nigeria (5.2%).
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to surgical glove exports from Senegal stood at +28.5%. At the same time, Ghana (+75.1%), Benin (+39.1%), Togo (+35.8%) and Sierra Leone (+31.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +75.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-1.4%) and Mali (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Senegal, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Togo and Benin increased by +30, +10, +10, +8.5 and +5 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X), Senegal ($X) and Mali ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 67% share of total exports. Benin, Togo, Ghana and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
Among the main exporting countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +51.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -5.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a slight decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 102%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2022, the amount of surgical gloves imported in Western Africa soared to X tons, increasing by 20% on 2021. Overall, imports posted a temperate increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, surgical glove imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a temperate increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 67%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Nigeria (X tons) was the key importer of surgical gloves, creating 51% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Togo (X tons), together committing a 27% share of total imports. Mauritania (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Benin (X tons), Mali (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Niger (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+45.6%), Guinea (+20.7%), Benin (+17.1%), Mauritania (+12.9%), Mali (+10.8%), Senegal (+7.6%) and Burkina Faso (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +45.6% from 2012-2022. Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Niger (-4.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Togo (+6.7 p.p.), Senegal (+3.6 p.p.), Mauritania (+2.6 p.p.) and Benin (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Niger, Ghana and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -1.8%, -4.2% and -10.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported surgical gloves in Western Africa, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria totaled -1.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ghana (+3.4% per year) and Senegal (+9.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -27.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 77%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+15.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
