For the fourth consecutive year, the West African frozen sweet corn market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 45% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption recorded a strong increase. Frozen Sweet Corn Production in Western Africa
In value terms, frozen sweet corn production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +23.1% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Senegal (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of frozen sweet corn production, accounting for 92% of total volume. Moreover, frozen sweet corn production in Senegal exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Togo (X tons), more than tenfold.
In Senegal, frozen sweet corn production expanded at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012-2021.
Frozen Sweet Corn Exports
Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, frozen sweet corn exports in Western Africa contracted sharply to X tons, falling by -33.5% on the previous year. Overall, exports saw a dramatic setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 615%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, frozen sweet corn exports dropped notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 453% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Togo was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 53% of total exports. Senegal (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X kg) and Nigeria (X kg). All these countries together held approx. 45% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +8.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Togo ($X), Senegal ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 97% share of total exports.
Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +7.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, frozen sweet corn export price increased by +24.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 72% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+9.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, the amount of frozen sweet corn imported in Western Africa soared to X tons, rising by 71% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 113% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, frozen sweet corn imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 90% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) was the largest importer of frozen sweet corn in Western Africa, making up 95% of total import.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the frozen sweet corn imports, with a CAGR of +35.9% from 2012 to 2021. Nigeria (+52 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
