In 2021, shipments abroad of synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments decreased by -2.4% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 130% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, organic pigments exports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 71% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 84% of total exports in 2021. Mali (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Nigeria (X tons). All these countries together held near 10% share of total exports. Senegal (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Cote d'Ivoire decreased at an average annual rate of -7.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+15.9%) and Senegal (+4.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +15.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-4.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mali and Senegal increased by +4.6 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest organic pigments supplier in Western Africa, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mali ($X), with a 5.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 4.6% share.
In Cote d'Ivoire, organic pigments exports contracted by an average annual rate of -10.2% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mali (+10.1% per year) and Senegal (-1.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 14% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 32%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (-2.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments increased by 0.6% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after four years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, organic pigments imports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell modestly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Nigeria represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 52% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Senegal (X tons). All these countries together took near 35% share of total imports. The following importers - Burkina Faso (X tons) and Mali (X tons) - together made up 5.3% of total imports.
Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+9.7%), Senegal (+5.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.7%) and Ghana (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +9.7% from 2012-2021. Mali experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Togo (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria increased by +2.2 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments in Western Africa, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 14% share.
In Nigeria, organic pigments imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+2.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -4% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+3.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
