Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, the amount of syringes, with or without needles exported in Western Africa surged to X units, increasing by 39% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, syringe exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Togo represented the key exporter of syringes, with or without needles in Western Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X units, which was near 41% of total exports in 2022. Cabo Verde (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 19% share, followed by Senegal (11%), Niger (8.4%), Liberia (7%), Burkina Faso (6.4%) and Cote d'Ivoire (5.8%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to syringe exports from Togo stood at +5.6%. At the same time, Liberia (+82.2%), Niger (+39.5%), Senegal (+9.8%), Burkina Faso (+8.7%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Liberia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +82.2% from 2012-2022. Cabo Verde experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Cabo Verde (+19 p.p.), Niger (+8.4 p.p.) and Liberia (+7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Togo (-18.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Togo ($X), Cabo Verde ($X) and Niger ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 71% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Cabo Verde, with a CAGR of +374.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per thousand units in 2022, rising by 11% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 54%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per thousand units. From 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per thousand units), while Senegal ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (-2.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, approx. X units of syringes, with or without needles were imported in Western Africa; shrinking by -9.9% against 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, syringe imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Nigeria (X units), Togo (X units) and Ghana (X units) represented the major importer of syringes, with or without needles in Western Africa, generating 65% of total import. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) held an 8.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Guinea (6.7%) and Mali (6.2%). Benin (X units) and Niger (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +32.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest syringe importing markets in Western Africa were Togo ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X), with a combined 83% share of total imports.

Togo, with a CAGR of +46.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per thousand units in 2022, surging by 146% against the previous year. Overall, the import price posted a remarkable increase. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per thousand units), while Ghana ($X per thousand units) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+13.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
