After three years of growth, the West African wood kitchenware and tableware market decreased by -1.4% to $X in 2021. The total consumption indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +48.4% against 2012 indices. In value terms, wood kitchenware and tableware production contracted slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +55.6% against 2013 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 29%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of tableware and kitchenware of wood increased by 185% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports recorded a buoyant increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, wood kitchenware and tableware exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a buoyant increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) was the main exporter of tableware and kitchenware of wood, creating 51% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Togo (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together comprising a 36% share of total exports. The following exporters - Mali (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Gambia (X tons) - together made up 8.3% of total exports.

Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tableware and kitchenware of wood exports, with a CAGR of +58.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+45.1%), Togo (+20.3%), Nigeria (+17.6%), Senegal (+7.8%) and Ghana (+7.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Gambia (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire and Mali increased by +47 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest wood kitchenware and tableware supplier in Western Africa, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 9.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 9% share.

In Cote d'Ivoire, wood kitchenware and tableware exports expanded at an average annual rate of +56.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ghana (+6.4% per year) and Togo (+22.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -4.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a mild slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 49%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (+7.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Tableware And Kitchenware Of Wood

Imports in Western Africa

For the third consecutive year, Western Africa recorded growth in purchases abroad of tableware and kitchenware of wood, which increased by 65% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 166%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood kitchenware and tableware imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate strong growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Senegal (X tons) was the largest importer of tableware and kitchenware of wood, comprising 41% of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Ghana (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 41% share of total imports. Nigeria (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood kitchenware and tableware imports into Senegal stood at +24.4%. At the same time, Togo (+50.9%), Burkina Faso (+24.9%), Cote d'Ivoire (+23.9%), Mauritania (+10.3%) and Ghana (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +50.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-10.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+27 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+9.5 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+7.7 p.p.) and Togo (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Ghana and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -15.8% and -23.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 75% of total imports. These countries were followed by Togo, Nigeria, Mauritania and Burkina Faso, which together accounted for a further 13%.

Among the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +40.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 33% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
