Exports in Western Africa
In 2021, overseas shipments of telecommunications instruments decreased by -4.6% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, telecommunications instrument exports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a dramatic setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 135% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Cabo Verde (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Guinea (X units), together accounting for 70% of total export. Benin (X units) took a 6.3% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Togo (5.3%), Niger (4.5%) and Nigeria (4.5%).
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +28.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest telecommunications instrument supplying countries in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Guinea ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 33% share of total exports. Togo, Benin, Niger and Cabo Verde lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Niger, with a CAGR of +16.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -51.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 70%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Cabo Verde ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+16.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of telecommunications instruments was finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 148%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, telecommunications instrument imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 110% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria represented the key importer of telecommunications instruments in Western Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X units, which was approx. 36% of total imports in 2021. Ghana (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Mali (12%), Cote d'Ivoire (11%) and Togo (7.1%). The following importers - Senegal (X units), Niger (X units) and Benin (X units) - together made up 9.2% of total imports.
Imports into Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -3.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Benin (+39.4%), Togo (+9.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (+4.0%) and Niger (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +39.4% from 2012-2021. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Senegal (-1.0%) and Mali (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Togo, Cote d'Ivoire, Benin and Ghana increased by +4.5, +4.3, +2.4 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest telecommunications instrument importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Mali ($X), with a combined 60% share of total imports. Nigeria, Niger, Senegal, Togo and Benin lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
Benin, with a CAGR of +34.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 12% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+13.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
