In 2021, the amount of telephone apparatus exported in Western Africa skyrocketed to X tons, increasing by 23% on the previous year's figure. Total exports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -18.8% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 78%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, telephone apparatus exports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 43%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria was the largest exporter of telephone apparatus in Western Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 52% of total exports in 2021. Ghana (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Benin (13%) and Mali (4.5%). The following exporters - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - together made up 6.8% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to telephone apparatus exports from Nigeria stood at +2.3%. At the same time, Benin (+33.0%), Ghana (+3.3%) and Mali (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +33.0% from 2012-2021. Cote d'Ivoire and Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Benin (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Nigeria (-4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest telephone apparatus supplier in Western Africa, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 9.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria stood at -2.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ghana (+0.5% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-1.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -30.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 35%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (-2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, the amount of telephone apparatus imported in Western Africa contracted slightly to X tons, remaining constant against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 32%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, telephone apparatus imports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 9.8%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria represented the main importer of telephone apparatus in Western Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 46% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Mali (X tons), together making up a 38% share of total imports. The following importers - Guinea (X tons), Benin (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) - together made up 10% of total imports.

Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of telephone apparatus. At the same time, Togo (+16.1%), Senegal (+8.1%), Benin (+4.4%) and Guinea (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +16.1% from 2012-2021. Mali, Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-3.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+5.6 p.p.) and Togo (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Nigeria (-6.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria stood at -7.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (-3.7% per year) and Senegal (+5.3% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -30.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
