The West African tomato ketchup market was estimated at $X in 2022, surging by 5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, shipments abroad of tomato ketchup and tomato sauces was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 490%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tomato ketchup exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 439%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Senegal was the main exporter of tomato ketchup and tomato sauces in Western Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was near 70% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Liberia (X tons) and Togo (X tons), together constituting a 24% share of total exports. The following exporters - Ghana (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) - together made up 4.6% of total exports.

Exports from Senegal increased at an average annual rate of +21.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Liberia (+57.3%), Togo (+21.4%) and Ghana (+16.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Liberia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +57.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-5.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Liberia (+16 p.p.) and Senegal (+9.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-17 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Togo ($X) and Liberia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 91% share of total exports.

Liberia, with a CAGR of +61.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 28% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+14.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, overseas purchases of tomato ketchup and tomato sauces were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 86% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tomato ketchup imports amounted to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -14.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ghana represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 35% of total imports. Sierra Leone (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Guinea (13%), Cote d'Ivoire (13%), Gambia (6.7%) and Liberia (5.1%). Mauritania (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +15.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Guinea (+39.5%), Cote d'Ivoire (+20.6%), Liberia (+19.8%), Gambia (+14.7%), Mauritania (+13.8%) and Sierra Leone (+7.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +39.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Ghana (+16 p.p.), Guinea (+12 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+8.5 p.p.), Liberia (+3.2 p.p.) and Gambia (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Sierra Leone (-1.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Sierra Leone ($X) and Guinea ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 57% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Guinea, with a CAGR of +42.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Sierra Leone ($X per ton) and Mauritania ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
