Tomato Puree Market Size in Western Africa

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the West African tomato puree market, when its value decreased by -3% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tomato puree production expanded markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 76% against the previous year. In 2022, shipments abroad of tomato puree and paste increased by 27% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 158%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tomato puree exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 147%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ghana represented the major exporter of tomato puree and paste in Western Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 44% of total exports in 2022. Togo (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (14%), Senegal (12%) and Mali (5%). Niger (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tomato puree exports from Ghana stood at +17.5%. At the same time, Togo (+62.4%), Cote d'Ivoire (+36.8%) and Senegal (+19.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +62.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Niger (-4.5%) and Mali (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+20 p.p.), Togo (+19 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+12 p.p.) and Senegal (+6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Niger and Mali saw its share reduced by -12.6% and -17.9% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest tomato puree supplier in Western Africa, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana totaled +23.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (+20.0% per year) and Togo (+50.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -14.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 16%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of tomato puree and paste decreased by -3.6% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports saw a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 11%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tomato puree imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ghana represented the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 28% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Togo (X tons), Benin (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Niger (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Guinea (X tons), together committing a 58% share of total imports. Gambia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Ghana decreased at an average annual rate of -3.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+12.3%), Togo (+6.5%), Niger (+6.2%), Senegal (+4.9%), Guinea (+4.3%), Benin (+4.2%) and Burkina Faso (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Sierra Leone emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +12.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Gambia (-1.6%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Togo (+7.5 p.p.), Benin (+6 p.p.), Sierra Leone (+4.4 p.p.), Ghana (+4 p.p.), Senegal (+3.9 p.p.), Niger (+3.6 p.p.), Burkina Faso (+2.8 p.p.), Guinea (+2.8 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tomato puree and paste in Western Africa, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 7.3% share.

In Ghana, tomato puree imports plunged by an average annual rate of -5.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (-3.5% per year) and Senegal (+4.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -10.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Niger (+0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
