In 2022, the West African tooth brush market decreased by -0.9% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a buoyant increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of tooth brushes increased by 23% to X units in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tooth brush exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 49%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ghana was the major exporting country with an export of about X units, which amounted to 53% of total exports. Togo (X units) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (13%), Mali (5.9%) and Gambia (4.6%). The following exporters - Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Senegal (X units) - each reached a 3.5% share of total exports.

Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of tooth brushes. At the same time, Mali (+25.6%), Nigeria (+9.6%) and Togo (+5.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +25.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Gambia (-6.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (-23.2%) and Senegal (-33.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (+28 p.p.), Togo (+13 p.p.), Nigeria (+11 p.p.) and Mali (+5.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Cote d'Ivoire (-10.3 p.p.) and Senegal (-48.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest tooth brush supplier in Western Africa, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 12% share.

In Ghana, tooth brush exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (+7.8% per year) and Nigeria (+10.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 12%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Gambia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, overseas purchases of tooth brushes decreased by -2.2% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tooth brush imports fell modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded tangible growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 65%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ghana (X units) was the major importer of tooth brushes, generating 35% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), Sierra Leone (X units), Gambia (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Liberia (X units) and Guinea (X units), together constituting a 54% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tooth brush imports into Ghana stood at +9.4%. At the same time, Gambia (+63.7%), Sierra Leone (+13.2%), Liberia (+9.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (+6.6%) and Guinea (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tooth brushes in Western Africa, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 9.6% share.

In Ghana, tooth brush imports expanded at an average annual rate of +11.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (-5.1% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+5.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 1.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per unit), while Liberia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
