Toothpaste Market Size in Western Africa

The West African toothpaste market shrank to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -11.1% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine-year period. In 2021, shipments abroad of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices decreased by -58.2% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, exports saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, toothpaste exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports faced a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 35%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) represented the key exporter of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices, mixing up 43% of total exports. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Senegal (20%) and Cote d'Ivoire (14%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to toothpaste exports from Nigeria stood at -15.0%. At the same time, Ghana (+15.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +15.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Senegal (-15.9%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-25.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana and Nigeria increased by +20 and +5.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest toothpaste supplying countries in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Senegal ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a combined 87% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Ghana, which accounted for a further 11%.

Among the main exporting countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +10.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 22% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

After four years of growth, overseas purchases of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices decreased by -18.2% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +73.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 41%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

In value terms, toothpaste imports contracted to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +42.5% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 38%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons), distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) represented the main importers of toothpaste, denture cleaners and other dentifrices, together comprising 85% of total imports. Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +21.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest toothpaste importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Guinea ($X), with a combined 68% share of total imports.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +19.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 8.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 23%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Guinea ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
