Sportswear Market Size in Western Africa

In 2021, the West African sportswear market decreased by -5.4% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +67.8% against 2014 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Sportswear Production in Western Africa

In value terms, sportswear production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +75.2% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, exports of track suits, ski suits and swimwear in Western Africa surged to X units, rising by 157% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports recorded a significant expansion. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, sportswear exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Togo was the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which resulted at 61% of total exports. Sierra Leone (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 30% share, followed by Mauritania (5.9%).

Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the track suits, ski suits and swimwear exports, with a CAGR of +90.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+26.7%) and Mauritania (+23.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Togo (+61 p.p.) and Sierra Leone (+11 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Togo ($X) remains the largest sportswear supplier in Western Africa, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sierra Leone ($X), with a 26% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Togo totaled +86.3%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sierra Leone (+23.2% per year) and Mauritania (+22.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 238%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per unit), while Mauritania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritania (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Sportswear Imports

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of track suits, ski suits and swimwear decreased by -13.8% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed perceptible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 107%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sportswear imports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, posted a notable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Togo was the key importer of track suits, ski suits and swimwear in Western Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X units, which was approx. 32% of total imports in 2021. Ghana (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Senegal (X units), Cabo Verde (X units) and Guinea (X units). All these countries together took near 55% share of total imports. Sierra Leone (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Togo (with a CAGR of +18.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Togo ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 62% of total imports.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +19.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 15%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Cabo Verde ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
