The West African tungsten halogen lamp market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2021, overseas shipments of tungsten halogen lamps decreased by -73.3% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 178%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tungsten halogen lamp exports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 97%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria represented the main exporter of tungsten halogen lamps in Western Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was approx. 64% of total exports in 2021. Mali (X units) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Sierra Leone (10%). The following exporters - Liberia (X units) and Senegal (X units) - each reached a 6.3% share of total exports.

Exports from Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Liberia (+31.0%), Senegal (+19.0%) and Mali (+14.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Liberia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +31.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Sierra Leone (-37.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+58 p.p.), Mali (+16 p.p.), Liberia (+3.2 p.p.) and Senegal (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Sierra Leone saw its share reduced by -81.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Mali ($X) emerged as the largest tungsten halogen lamp supplier in Western Africa, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Sierra Leone ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 20% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mali stood at +28.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sierra Leone (-23.5% per year) and Nigeria (-4.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, rising by 112% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 118% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+21.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, approx. X units of tungsten halogen lamps were imported in Western Africa; with an increase of 31% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 314%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tungsten halogen lamp imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 79%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

The purchases of the three major importers of tungsten halogen lamps, namely Ghana, Senegal and Nigeria, represented more than half of total import. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.7% share, followed by Burkina Faso (8.8%), Togo (7.9%) and Guinea (4.6%).

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Senegal ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 73% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +20.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 499%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
