Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of turkey meat decreased by -1.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports showed a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 89%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, turkey meat exports fell modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 89%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Benin prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Togo (X tons), constituting a 5.1% share of total exports. Liberia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to turkey meat exports from Benin stood at -16.1%. Liberia (-4.0%) and Togo (-14.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Liberia increased by +2.7 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Benin ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of turkey meat decreased by -6.5% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -15.3% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 82% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, turkey meat imports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 89%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Benin (X tons) was the main importer of turkey meat, committing 54% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 24% share, followed by Guinea (11%) and Liberia (6.7%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to turkey meat imports into Benin stood at -2.8%. At the same time, Ghana (+17.6%), Guinea (+12.9%) and Liberia (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +17.6% from 2012-2022. While the share of Ghana (+19 p.p.), Guinea (+7.2 p.p.) and Liberia (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Benin (-27.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Benin ($X), Ghana ($X) and Guinea ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 87% share of total imports.

Ghana, with a CAGR of +17.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -9.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 10%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Ghana ($X per ton) and Guinea ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) and Liberia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (-0.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
