Exports in Western Africa

Exports of uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers fell to X tons in 2021, waning by -5.2% compared with the previous year. In general, exports recorded a precipitous setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 99% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, exports of uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers shrank to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a precipitous shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 196%. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Sierra Leone represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 63% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Ghana (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 29% share of total exports. The following exporters - Togo (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) - together made up 7.7% of total exports.

Exports from Sierra Leone increased at an average annual rate of +8.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+56.2%), Togo (+50.1%), Ghana (+17.8%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+17.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +56.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-13.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Sierra Leone, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria and Burkina Faso increased by +61, +18, +11, +4, +1.8 and +1.7 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X) remains the largest uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers supplier in Western Africa, comprising 64% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Sierra Leone amounted to +10.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+8.5% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+7.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 93% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

After four years of decline, supplies from abroad of uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers increased by 108% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible increase. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, imports of uncoated mechanical printing and writing papers surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
