For the third year in a row, the West African orange juice (single strength) market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 51% to $X in 2021. For the fifth year in a row, Western Africa recorded decline in overseas shipments of orange juice (single strength), which decreased by -47.4% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports faced a sharp slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 4.8%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, orange juice (single strength) exports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a sharp decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons) represented the main exporter of orange juice (single strength), generating 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Togo (X tons) and Mali (X tons), together comprising a 19% share of total exports. Niger (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Ghana decreased at an average annual rate of -26.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+19.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +19.7% from 2012-2021. Niger and Togo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Togo, Mali and Niger increased by +11, +7.5 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest orange juice (single strength) supplier in Western Africa, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Togo ($X), with a 4.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Mali, with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana totaled -23.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (-4.2% per year) and Mali (+1.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -15.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, orange juice (single strength) export price decreased by -26.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 36%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of orange juice (single strength) were imported in Western Africa; surging by 38% on the previous year's figure. Overall, imports recorded prominent growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 5.2%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Guinea-Bissau ($X per ton), while Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
