In 2022, the average unmanufactured tobacco yield in Western Africa reached X kg per ha, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 2.8% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X kg per ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the unmanufactured tobacco yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of tobacco (unmanufactured) production in Western Africa stood at X ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 7.5%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to unmanufactured tobacco production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa
In 2022, exports of tobacco (unmanufactured) in Western Africa declined slightly to X tons, with a decrease of -3.9% compared with the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 92%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 93%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Senegal (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together making up 89% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Niger (X tons), committing a 7.3% share of total exports. Nigeria (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +12.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest unmanufactured tobacco supplier in Western Africa, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Niger, with a 9.6% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (+15.9% per year) and Niger (+51.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -3.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2022, unmanufactured tobacco imports in Western Africa skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 22% compared with the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +21.4% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Nigeria (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) dominates imports structure, together achieving 91% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), constituting a 7.8% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +6.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Senegal ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 99% share of total imports.
Nigeria, with a CAGR of +8.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
